Articulate and knowledgeable, Fern brings a powerful, passionate, health-centered philosophy to every program with which she is involved. She’s passionate about women’s health issues and helping women negotiate this challenging terrain. Her experience is front-line as a provider, health care educator and a patient. It all started as a critical care nurse. With heart operations part of her daily routine, Fern observed something she thought should not be routine, and that was the return of the repeat offenders. What about prevention? What about behavior modification? Fern founded Wellness at Work, a company dedicated to health promotion and wellness. Integrating her clinical and business backgrounds, she designed and implemented programs that transition from the medical model to the wellness model. Fern is such an advocate for women's health, that we call her, "A Voice for Women's Health." As a breast cancer survivor, Fern’s perspectives both as a patient and a health care professional, give empathy and levity to topics she knows intimately. For heart health events, she brings a keen perspective to the unique aspects of women and heart health, And, nurse to nurse, she shares the inside story (this is a woman who collects bed pans -- antique, that is!) A perenially busy and involved woman, Fern is co-owner of a medical specialty lingerie store, "Just Like A Woman," in Portland, Oregon. Catering to women from puberty to maturity whose medical condition may present a lingerie challenge, this enterprise alone keeps her in the forefront with the day-to-day reality of women's health issues. Fern has authored numerous publications and audiocassette albums, including "Ready, Set, Stop," a smoking cessation program, and "Wise Woman’s Approach to Healing and Cancer." Always entertaining and occasionally irreverent, Fern brings expertise with a sense of perspective to women’s health, heart health and breast cancer events.
